Privacy Policy

Nook is operated by the Nook team. For any privacy question, including a request to see or delete your data, write to contact@nook-study.com. We answer within 30 days.

Your account. An email address, and a password that is stored only as a hash by our authentication provider. If you sign in with Google we receive your email address and basic profile information from Google instead. We never see your Google password.

Your focus sessions. What you type as the thing you are working on, how long the session ran, whether you paused it, and whether you switched away from the app while it was running. This is what makes a session history and the focus score possible.

Study rooms. Which rooms you are in, that you are present in them, and the messages you send in room chat. Other people in the room see your display name, your presence and your messages. If you report a message, we keep a copy of that message and of who sent it, so that it can be reviewed. If you block someone, that is recorded against your account only, and they are not told.

Nib, the companion. The messages you type or speak to Nib, and the context of the session you are in. See the separate section on voice below.

Nib's notebook. Only if you turn it on. Nib keeps short written notes about how you work, for example that you study best in the evening. The notebook is visible and erasable on your profile page at any time. It is off until you agree to it.

Basic usage analytics. Aggregate page views through Vercel Web Analytics, which does not use cookies and does not build a profile of you.

We do not collect your contacts, your location, your files, your device identifiers for advertising, or anything from other apps on your phone. There is no advertising in Nook and we do not sell data.

Nib's voice mode is off until you turn it on, and the microphone is only opened while it is on.

When you speak to Nib, a short clip of your speech is sent to Groq to be turned into text. The text of what you said, along with the state of your current session, is sent to Anthropic to produce Nib's reply. Nib's reply text is sent to OpenAI to be turned into speech. Nook does not store the audio, in either direction. The providers process it to answer the request under their own API terms, which do not permit training on it.

Voice rooms are different: room audio is a direct peer to peer connection between the people in the room. When a direct connection is not possible it is relayed through our own relay servers, still encrypted. Room audio is never recorded and never reaches any AI provider.

We use a small set of providers, each doing one job, and each acting on our instructions:

• Supabase, for the database and for signing you in.
• Vercel, for hosting the app and for aggregate analytics.
• Groq, to turn speech into text.
• Anthropic, to produce what Nib says.
• OpenAI, to turn Nib's replies into speech.
• Google, only if you choose to sign in with Google.

Your data may be processed in the United States and the European Union depending on the provider. We do not share your data with anyone else, and we do not sell it.

Your account and your session history are kept until you delete your account. Study rooms are deleted automatically once they have been idle for 30 minutes, which deletes their messages with them. Notebook notes are kept until you erase them or turn the notebook off.

You can delete your Nook account and everything attached to it at any time, from inside the app: open your profile, and use Delete account under "Your account". It takes effect immediately and removes your account, your session history, your room messages and Nib's notebook. It cannot be undone.

If you would rather not do it yourself, or you can no longer sign in, email contact@nook-study.com from the address on the account with the subject "Delete my account". We do it within 30 days and confirm when it is done.

A record that a focus session happened is kept for counting how the product is used, with the link to you removed, so it can no longer be traced back to a person.

You can erase the notebook on its own, without deleting your account, from your profile page.

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to see a copy of your data, to correct it, to have it deleted, or to object to how it is used. Ask at the address above and we will do it. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.

Nook is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect anything from them. If you believe a child has an account, write to us and we will remove it.

If this policy changes in a way that matters, we will update the date at the top and, for anything significant, tell you in the app before it takes effect.
